The question about whether to wear an undershirt or not have always been an issue among most men and most people tend to keep this question to them self and use self judgment to either wear or not wear, and also to identify the type to buy. Are undershirts really essential to be part of every guy’s wardrobe?

Well I don’t know about you, but I get disgusted when men don’t value the importance of an undershirt and either don’t wear them when they really need to, or wear them wrongly when they eventually do. Here in this post I will cover Men’s undershirt guide showing you all you need to know about men’s undershirt, lets roll.

Describing an undershirt- understanding its root

But before we get into details understanding an undershirt it’s best to first discuss its history

Factory mass-produced undershirts became common in the West in the early 20th century, with innovations turning the union suit which it a type of one-piece long underwear.into two pieces, for upper and lower body. Since the modernization of the union suit which lead the innovation of why we now have the undershirts and underwear which used to be classified as the same thing in previous time.

An undershirt it a piece of clothing worn underneath a dress shirt intended to protect it from body sweat and odors. Alternatively, it may be worn to protect the body from stiff or otherwise uncomfortable fabric that a person may choose to wear. It can have short sleeves or be sleeveless. The term most commonly refers to upper-body wear worn by males. This article of clothing typically has a low, round neckline that can be worn for athletic purposes.

Types of Undershirt for men

  1. A shirt: The shirt which stands for athletic shirt it a sleeveless undershirt worn by most men under several categories of dress option to complement
  2. T-shirt,
    1. V-neck Shirts are a type of shirt with shirt that it artfully low-cut
    2. Crew neck shirts it a close-fitting round neckline

Whether to wear an undershirt or not

Undershirts are definitely a must have for every man but whether to wear or not the main thing here though is not to confuse the shirt with a tank top

A tank top can be worn as an outside visible shirt but never as an undershirt same with the undershirt it should never be used as an outside visible shirt but rather undershirt worn underneath.

Advantages of wearing an undershirt

It makes dress shirts less transparent and more fitting, with undershirts you don’t necessarily have to worry about your biceps gripping the dress shirt you have on if you have a smaller biceps, the undershirt can added as a grip holding the shirt and adding the toned effect.

It can also be worn during winter months or if you are always cold as an extra layer of clothing for warmth.

If you sweat profusely an undershirt it the best option to hold the sweat and prevent it from touching the outer shirt, because it absorbs the sweat leaving the outer shirt clean, stopping your sweat from getting all over pricey fabrics and making your clothes wear through faster than they need to.

Undershirts provide a crucial layer under your clothing, It might seem too much of a bad choice to wear them during summer but it the best option when you consider layering.

Wearing an evening shirts for black tie and white, undershirts can help avoid chafed skin, and it invisible underneath the bib shirt front.

Undershirts can keep ample chest hair from poking through the surface of the shirt.

Without an undershirt there it the very high chance your dress shirt will get deodorant stains. Although you can remove those stains with some stain remover, but that can wear out the shirt and reduce its usage time

Well cut undershirts, are not visible in the collar area even if you wear your top two shirt buttons unbuttoned.

The crew neck undershirt has a high neckline that it somewhat visible when you wear your dress shirt buttoned-up, but it looks particularly terrible.

Common mistakes and guides

Buying cheap undershirts: cheap underwear are affordable and they actually fit at first till you wash them and then they’d become slack. You don’t have to wear slack shirts, take priority in fitting and getting the right type of undershirts at the right price, even it means investing a few for a long time enjoyment

Wearing loose undershirts: cloths fitting it not only advisable for the visible piece of clothing but also for the piece of undershirts also, the fact there it had it absorbs the sweat quickly and also gives great support to what we wear

Undershirts as Tank tops: Undershirts are never like out regular T-Shirt and they are meant to be underneath the clothing and never as a t-shirt, undershirts must be properly well hidden in the background to create a matching effect with the outside shirt. Also, undershirt materials are mostly cottoned or silk so the need less exposure unlike our regular Tan top t-shirts

Most men who wear undershirts today either go with a classic crew neck or v-neck style. Plain white shirts are available everywhere and even solid-colored versions can be found easily. Just like the sleeveless shirts, they usually come in pure cottoned or poly blends, though lately there have been all kinds of cotton blends with spandex, viscose, modal, etc. Usually the goal of these additions it to either make the shirts softer or more durable, but they generally come with a higher price tag.

One of the worst style mistakes you can commit it to show your undershirt when you wear your shirt unbuttoned or when the lines show underneath your dress shirt. If you wear summer shirts with thin fabric, it impossible not to see the undershirt, whereas winter or flannel shirts will reveal the lines of a well-constructed undershirt.

What really matters the most it continence yeah!, if you choose to wear an undershirt or not you have to be convenient, confidence and look smart in whatever you wear without having any negative effect on your self-esteem.

I really don’t know why a male won’t want to wear an undershirt. Why some males do that is beyond me. I find it extremely uncomfortable when I don’t wear an undershirt. It would feel like I am incomplete. I don’t know if this is how other people feel but it is definitely how I feel if I don’t wear an undershirt. Also undershirts helps absorb the sweat from your body making the shirt you put on less likely to get soaked by sweat. It is really important and it is something I just can’t do without when I put… Read more »

Your post on Men’s Undershirts was quite informative and it was interesting to see the original form of an undershirt.

I agree, it most certainly will keep one a little warmer in winter and it will prolong the life of the outer garments.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge about Men’s Undershirts with us.

Yea, undershirts are good for men and it gives fitting when worn, but i will like to say that one cannot wear undershirt all the time, the simple reason being that for those living in the tropic, savanna and extremely hot regions, undershirts may not even be on the menu for dresses.

But in the real sense, undershirts are good to complement your dressing,

Hunting around for ‘Singlets’ thats what we call undershirts in Australia I landed here and really had a giggle at the photo of the union suits, I feel if a man is getting ”dressed” then an undershirt is an essential, but on a casual day it really isn’t necessary. The climate has a lot do to with wearing an undershirt, in an Australian summer it may be a bit hot, but if I was at a wedding for example in summer I still feel it finishes a dressed look, even in the heat.

Hello this is an interesting post. Personally I usually do wear an under shirt as it’s just more comfortable for me personally and also in the colder climates of the U.K. at winter it’s essential. I hadn’t really considered some of the fashion points of how to wear them best though so this is very useful for me. Thanks for this share.

Wow.. seems like wearing undershirt is really something men should do. But in my country, most men won’t wear undershirt despite I am staying in tropical environment. Can I know what’s the best way to convince a man to wear undershirt when it’s not even a thing to them. But for me, i think is a must for men to wear. Hope you are able to give me some tips on how to convince to wear one.

Great post and good info.

You explain so many things about undershirts which I didn’t knew.

For me an undershirt is something nasty, like you’re a farmer or so, yes I know, I’m a classic guy.

But now reading this, I think I have to reconsider my thoughts.

Thanks for sharing it with us!
