Little History on Body Grooming

Historically, body hair has been associated with virility, power and attractiveness. Body hair removal is not just a modern-day fad. In fact, hair removal has a traceable history that stretches as far back as ancient Egypt, where men and women would shave their bodies, heads and faces and priests ritualistically shaved their bodies every three days.

Back in the 5th century BC, the Greeks see the young, hairless, athletic man as beautiful while hairy bodies were considered hideous and associated with satyrs, barbarians and the cult of Dionysus.

For much of the late 19th century, long beards were en vogue and hair removal was frowned upon. The 1960s were also a major ‘hair milestone’ as hippies let hair of all kinds grow wild in contrast to the clean-cut military style during the Vietnam War. Hair and hairy chests were signs of eroticism and free love. “Too much hairy stuff”

During the 1990s, the idea of the perfect man as plucked, very well moisturized, neat-shaven and devoid of most body hair went mainstream and dominated major media from fashion magazines to television, due to the kinds of fashion wears and accessories of that time and even now. The metro sexual period also made it socially acceptable for men to shave parts of their body, face and neck.

There are tons of grooming tools out there, ranging from Shavers, trimmers, Wax, tweezers, electrolysis, mangroomers among others, while by definition and origin grooming tools are tools used for trimming, shaving, cutting, tweezing and combing, there have been some arguments that there are some people who would want to leave their body hair untrimmed deodorants and body cream should be added to the grooming kit.

Electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle and applying an electric current to the follicle root. This procedure burns the hair root, theoretically preventing it from producing more hair. Though it is advisable to seek the advice of a Trichologist before embarking on this to avoid or minimize any consequence.

Waxing is hair removal from the root. New hair will not grow back in the previously waxed area for four to six weeks, Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including eyebrows, face, pubic hair (called bikini waxing), legs, arms, back, abdomen, knuckles, and feet apart from the scrotal and external body wounds. There are many types of waxing suitable for removing unwanted hair from the body.

Strip waxing (soft wax) is accomplished by spreading a wax thinly over the skin. A cloth or paper strip is applied and pressed firmly, adhering the strip to the wax and the wax to the skin. The strip is then quickly ripped against the direction of hair growth, as parallel as possible to the skin to avoid trauma to the skin. This removes the wax along with the hair. There are different forms of strip waxing or soft waxing: heated, cold or pre-made strips. Unlike cold waxing, heated wax is spread easily over the skin. Cold waxing is thicker, which makes it more difficult to spread smoothly over the skin. Pre-made strips come with the wax on them, and they come in different sizes for different area uses.

Stripless wax which is also referred to as hard wax, is applied somewhat thickly and with no cloth or paper strips as opposed strip waxing. The wax then hardens when it cools, thus allowing the easy removal by a therapist without the aid of cloths. This waxing method is very beneficial to people who have sensitive skin. Stripless wax does not adhere to the skin as much as strip wax does, thus making it a good option for sensitive skin as finer hairs are more easily removed because the hard wax encapsulates the hair as it hardens. The stripless waxing method can also be less painful.

Hair reduces the amount of air exchange and traps sweat so it can support the growth of odor-causing bacteria, for a guy that does not have all the time to constantly worry about those bacteria smells, grooming not only brings the hygiene importance but good
  • Most guys also take to body grooming to show off their muscles(Biceps and triceps), especially for guys with hairy chest, grooming actually brings out the shape of the biceps and clearly outlines the packs, especially when you pull off those undershirts.
  • Some men take up body grooming to stay up to date with current trend, take for example. “Beard Gangs” and other trends.
  • Besides, trimming or removing body hair has long been popular among athletes because it can provide a slight competitive edge. 1. I love this topic, its one that I think gets overlooked. I wasn’t aware there were so many tools for men either, good to know as my b/f likes to keep his back well groomed. It looks like the “man groomer” would be a great gift for him and I’m sure it would save time rather than using a razor.

What can you tell me about ingrown hairs though and how to avoid them?

    1. Ingrown hairs are those hairs that have curled around and grown back into your skin instead of rising up from it, using a razor is actually good if a shaver is not within your reach.

But the best way to avoid an ingrown hair is to be careful of cuts on the skin and also engage in proper grooming techniques.

      Hope this helps

  2. I need to give body grooming a go this spring. Back during my competition days, I used to do this prior to a show but never any other time. I do recall feeling on top of the world back when I did body groom. I felt great, to be honest. It’s something I really want to get into doing on a regular basis as spring rolls around! I used to just use cream to rid my body hair, but your method is far better, especially with the man groomer. Thanks for the tips.

  3. That’s really cool, I never heard about this, I guess you’re right, I will try this! Thank you for teaching about body grooming!

  4. feeling a bit jealousy for hubby just bookmarked this great post for him. Do you have any suggestions on how to groom your beard if you don’t want to shave them off? he loves his beard like crazy but he just can’t groom them well lol

    1. “smiles” you don’t have to. But here is what I would recommend using Combs-properly combing would show the real size and shape or the hair making it easy to groom the excess hairs.
      Hair Bleachers
Beard Shaper-used for creating a curve on where you actually want to shave making it easy to look neat and clean-shaven.

      Hope this helps

  5. What a great topic to discuss. My husband is one of those people who likes to be well groomed, especially if it concerns body hair. He definitely needs the Mangroomer. I will have to check that out in more detail. Right now he waxes which has actually stopped hair from coming back. But he doesn’t like the pain associated with waxing. He’s getting tired of it actually.

The tweezing option, I imagine would hurt way more. Electrolysis is another option we have been discussing. You have given me some great birthday gift ideas for him. Thank you for this body grooming article!

  6. Great post. Thankfully my husband is pretty good with his grooming, except for his back hair. I’m always stuck having to shave it for him but now i know there’s a tool he can get to do it himself…WIN for me! As far as beards go, my husband won’t shave his off but he does like to maintain it. Do you have any good beard oils you would recommend?

  7. Very comprehensive look at grooming. This is definitely the part I need to pay more attention to.
I know it’s not just the body but the mind would feel good and confident.
So you talked about making grooming a routine and I agree that’s the best way to incorporate that into my life. May I ask how long does it take for your everyday?
    Thanks for sharing this.

    1. If you Plan to do this, its all your choice here and also depends on how fast the hair on your body grows back. And grooming should not take you more than 15-20 minnutes really or even less than that.

and for the number of times you may choose twice in a week three times in two weeks, when there is a special occasion. As far as you are comfortable grooming, just make your routine flexible.

  8. This article was really helpful! Did know so much about grooming but your product recommendations were great! Will take this into consideration when my boyfriend’s birthday comes 🙂

  9. Great piece of advice here!

I always relied on my wife to help me with parts of my body like the back but the mangroomer is the solution to my problem.

I also loved the multifunction grooming kit, as it includes all the necessary items for full grooming operations.

    Well done for your post!
